Ibu Yanti First time joining WKP, she was a salt producers. She had group of producers which consisted of 15 members. She also had side job of making the cracker, and working as a fisherman, catching fish and crab. After joined WKP, she received loan of Rp.500.000,- , and she used the money to open new business, a convenient stall, selling many household products, such as sugar, rice, soap, oil, etc. During the time, she received training of making soap, and dissemination of the benefit of consuming clean water. This training and dissemintation were very useful to her, as she can make her own soap to be sold in her stall. Apart from using the money as the capital to built her business, she also used the money to help her cashflow and paying the debts. Moreover, she also received useful information, her husband is more welcome now with others as he used to be an introvert person, lack of social intercourse , and the condition of their children is getting better because ibu Yanti can afford their children to go to school. Imam Arifin Imam started his handicraft business in 1999. He comes from jember, and moving to Bali in 1987, and tried to sell clothes. The history of him selling this handicraft began by selling wooden cars as a street vendor. Using capital from profit of selling the wooden car, he tried to open the art shop. He sold handicraft products from other producers at the begining, but it did not give him profit as the price was very high. Afteral, he tried to sell his own products to be able to compete. Some of the products that he produces by his own are placemate, wooden drum, and photo album. Now, he has 4 staffs in his art shop. He joined WKP in 2008. The money received was used to support his business. Pasek Sukarjana I have been blessed by the Lord for what I have now. I have five great sons who are currently studying in varying education level. Three of my oldest sons are studying in university; my fourth child is studying in senior high school, while my youngest child is studying in junior high school.
It was not an easy thing for me to provide good education for my sons. I must fight to improve the economic condition of my family. How can I provide a better school for my children if I keep struggling with my economic condition? That was why, as a man who grew up in farmer family, I always think about running a farming business well. Before, I only thought about this business because I had no skill in other field. However, after running this business for many years, I’ve got that I have been really falling in love with this business.
I have been running pig and chicken fattening business for many years. Great thanks to my Lord because he has blessed my business so that I can support my children’s education. However, I actually never satisfied with what I have got for my business. I always want to do something and to try something new. I love challenges in my business because by facing that I will be able to improve not only my business but also my character.
In addition, what I always concern about is how I can give my contribution to my neighbors. I can not live only by myself so I must care about my society. Although I am not a rich man it does not mean that I can do something for the society.
That was why when I heard about WKP’s program in empowering the community I was interested to join with this program. Ratih (WKP’s Executive Director) came to my place and share to me about some programs had been implemented by WKP especially for Git Git area. I knew from that WKP has helped Git Git village in providing clean water distribution. This program has made people in Git Git especially the direct beneficiaries getting better and better in their health.
Then, from Ratih I got information that WKP also empower the community through group empowerment (It is also well-known as community organizing). As soon as I got information about the advantage of this program I was committed to ask some of my neighbors to join with this program. I want to prove the information that by involving in group I will be able to do much more for my family as well as for my community.
February 29, 2006 is still being a history date for me because at that time I and my neighbors agreed to form a group which would enable us to help each other. It was not an easy thing in starting the new group. Some meetings held to improve our motivation in joining the group and to set up the group structure and regulations. Besides, in some group preparations, WKP facilitated us to have training of doing animal husbandry business especially in cow fattening program.
For me, cow fattening program was a new program that I had yet run before especially cow fattening with concentrate feeding. I knew some of my friends in the group have ever raised cow fattening business but with traditional feeding system. However, thanks to the Lord, although I and my friends in the group had yet run this business, we were sure to try this because of the great encouragement given by WKP.
Before I and 15 other members in my group could start this business, we facilitated by WKP learnt how to set up and to run this business including how to get business capital for this business. It was quit a long time for me to wait until the business capital can be disbursed by WKP. My group was set up in February but the business loan was disbursed in September. Before I thought why it took so long to start the business. However, then I realized that I and other members in group had to pass all steps so that we will have good group with good members in the group.
Finally after I and my friends in the groups passed all the preparation process, we got our first loan disbursement of 58,000,000 IDR (9,667NZD; 1NZD = 6,000 IDR). We used that loan to fatten about 13 cow with its initial weight was about 300 kilograms. We fattened the cows for about 4 months.
During the fattening process, WKP keep helping us by giving us good guidance and help us if we need vaccination for our cows. However, during the fattening process, we also faced some problems such as: in determining the composition of concentrate feeding mixed with grass which influenced the increasing of cow’s weight. I could hardly believe that the cow’s weight did not increase significantly at weight measurement time. We could not get the cow’s weight as we predicted before even though we had tried to feed the cow based on the composition suggested.
After four months in cow fattening process, we finally had opportunity to sell the fattened cow in December 2006. We actually wanted to postpone the marketing process because last time we measured the cow’s weight, its weight did not reach the standard weight of fattened cow to be marketed with good price. However, if we waited until the cow reached the standard weight; its selling price might be getting lower than the price in December. Therefore we finally started to market the cow in December. From the total selling price, we got financial loss for about 4,000,000 IDR.
We felt sad for the financial lost we had, but it did not make us to stop the group development. In my opinion, I think what I and my friends have done in our cow fattening business is a great effort. It is common thing for the beginner like us to face this situation. I have ever faced the situation like this in developing my other business. The most important thing for me is how I and my friends can handle this situation and can learn something from this condition. We learnt how to feed the cow correctly to reach the standard cow’s weight. We also learnt how to motivate each member in the group to keep fight in the bad situation. We sure by our togetherness in the group, we will be able to fix this situation and to have a better business development in the future.

Besides, from the information he got, he found that joining program held by WKP would enable him to improve his business performance because WKP would give him intensive business guidance including for his product marketing. Since he was motivated to join with WKP program, he asked some of his friends to join with him in this program so he and his friend could form a group to encourage each other.
Before the group could establish, each candidate had to pass the preparation process. In this process, field officer of WKP explain about WKP’s program, its vision and mission, and what kind of programs have been and are going to be implemented by WKP for the community. The second process was boards forming to choose who will be the chairman, the secretary, and the treasurer. Then, the boards led the members to set up the group’ regulation. Finally, after all regulations have been set up, WKP disbursed the loan to the group which was about 9,900,000 IDR.
“Thank you very much for the opportunity has given to me to join with WKP’s program. Now I can have real business which enables me and my wife in supporting our children. Furthermore, I would like to say thank you too for some trainings have given to my wife such as making incense and detergent. Yes, we now are focusing our business on fruit stand product but for the future we especially my wife would like to try a business of making incense or detergent. She hopes it can be done as a group business,” said Sandi.
Design guidance from WKP has helped Sandi to be more creative in his business. As his partner, WKP will help Sandi in expanding his market area. After his product met the standard quality for overseas demand, WKP will assist him in product marketing focusing on overseas market. Besides, WKP will also assist him to reach other local markets in Bali as well as in other provinces in
The soon product exhibition will be held in June 2007. This is great place for Sandi and other WKP’s clients to exhibit their products. That is why; WKP is focusing on improving the clients’ product design including Sandi’s products. Launching a handicraft website is also being WKP’s concern at this moment to provide more services for WKP’s clients and Sandi’s product will be one of our products’ priorities to be promoted through this website.
For Sandi, all WKP’s plan in assisting his product has given great motivation for him and his wife to work harder in their business. However, to get better product in the future, based on the volunteer’s observation, Sandi needs bench grinder and basic wood turning tool. Therefore, Sandi hopes that he would be able to get next loan disbursement for these tools. However before that, he hopes that his product can be promoted to overseas market.
